FAQs

Are McCain Calls handmade?

Yes. I start out by selecting a piece of wood and trimming it down to size. Then the wood is stabilized if necessary and a hole is drilled through the block that will become the barrel. Next, the band, which I make from brass fittings, is pressed on and pins are hammered in to secure the band in place. Now we’re ready for the part I enjoy the most, turning the wood on the lathe. This is where the overall shape and style of the call is created. After turning the insert, a hole is drilled and the tone board is ready to be cut. I developed this tone board myself after years of trial and error. After cutting down the general shape of the tone board, the final shape is filed down and the reed and cork are inserted. Finally, the call is ready for tuning. The reed is trimmed and small sanding is done in key locations on the board to achieve the desired sound. The final touch is adding an oil finish for protection.

I want to purchase a duck call as a gift, but am not sure where to start. What should I do?

No problem! We’d love to help you find that perfect gift. Check out our in stock items and if nothing strikes your fancy, head over to our Custom Call page to check out our call gallery. Submit a custom call form and let us know which calls from the past you are interested in. We’ll create something really special for you. No matter how simple or ornate.

How long will it take to receive my custom call?

Each call is unique and can vary in material and detail. Some calls may take longer than others and while I take my commitment to my customers very seriously, this is ultimately a hobby I do for enjoyment outside of my regular 9 to 5. Having the freedom to take my time, ensuring every detail is in place, is to me, what makes our calls special. Our call priority is first come first serve. During your call consultation we will discuss where you fall in our books and a timeframe for completion. You will be kept up to speed on the progress of your call.

Where can I see examples of woods and materials that can be used to create my call?

Our Wood Shop has pictures of blanks that can be selected and turned for custom calls. These blanks are in stock and ready for the lathe. You can also check out our finished calls at the top of the Custom Call page.

Can I submit a piece of wood to be used to create my call?

I’d love to say yes to this under any circumstance, but the truth is that there are several factors that determine if a piece of wood is suitable for turning into a call. Sometimes we simply just may not be able to make it work. If this is something you are considering, consider this first: “how would I feel if this piece of wood is damaged or destroyed during the call making process.” The truth is that, just like with most things, hand turning duck calls can come with making mistakes and other things that are simply out of control. For example, a piece of wood can explode and splinter into hundreds of pieces on the lathe. This is caused from an internal crack that can’t be seen from the outside. McCain Calls is not responsible for any wood that is damaged.
